Biography

Terry Hoff’s artistic practice revolves around a cyclical process of accumulation, organization, editing, and deconstruction, only to begin again.

For Hoff, the joy of searching for and embracing strange beauty forms the foundation of his work. His paintings are shaped by the subconscious mind, drawing from a vast lexicon of imagery: Saturday morning cartoons, Disney classics, Tex Avery animations, Spongebob, and mid-century commercial art from the 1950s and 60s. Hoff’s approach resembles doodling on Pee-Chee folders, combined with collage techniques using handmade decals crafted from paint or paper, often encased in glossy epoxy resin.

The layered, piled compositions in his paintings reflect the elaborate density of his earlier installation work, creating a “playpen of paint” where experimentation leads to discoveries that feel both oddly new and strangely familiar. Through this exploration, Hoff’s work underscores the peculiar and fascinating experience of being human.
