Good Mother Gallery Los Angeles is proud to present "As Is," a solo exhibition by artist Sean Hamilton. This new collection of paintings delves into the everyday life of an archetypal individual from a fly-over state. Hamilton invites viewers to walk into a stranger's home, offering an intimate glimpse into their world.
"As Is" humanizes the experience of an ordinary life by revealing the subject's home, aspirations, and treasured memories. While the exhibition may evoke self-reflection, it remains a broader commentary on what holds significance for people and their priorities. Throughout this body of work, Hamilton portrays scenes of monster truck rallies, motorcycles, and the act of selling a truck. These images are juxtaposed with symbols of comfort and leisure, such as Lazy Boy couches, mirroring the subject's ambitions, memories, and unfulfilled dreams.
Entering the exhibition feels akin to exploring an estate sale, where each item and scene tells a story of the person's life. Hamilton captures the universal desire for adventure and consumerism: the thrill of dirt biking, the draw of catalog shopping, and the innate fascination with roadside accidents.
"As Is" presents an absurd yet humorous take on existence, highlighting the peculiarities of living in a capitalist society. These dichotomies exemplify the contradictions in our own lives. Hamilton's work uncovers the familiar in the unfamiliar, making viewers feel as though they are uncovering the life of someone they unknowingly recognize.
