Good Mother Gallery is opening Night Carries Color, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist
Lacey Stoffer, on Saturday, November 7. The opening reception runs from 5 to 7 pm, and the
show is on view through December 4, 2026.
The title comes from an interest in what stays present even as it changes, recedes or gets
covered. In Stoffer's paintings, color is often pushed back and surrounded by darker, quieter
fields. Night isn't treated as an absence. It holds and carries what came before.
Stoffer works with linen, oil paint, hand-dyed yarn, thread, collage, paper-clay pins painted with
gouache, and pastel. Large fields of color and organic forms are interrupted by yarn sewn
straight through the surface, sometimes veiling a painted shape and adding weight, direction
and texture. She works the canvas from both sides, pushing and pulling the yarn back and forth
through the linen.
Her process is hands-on and full of testing. She dyes her own yarn, sculpts small paper-clay pins,
and pins pieces of linen to the surface and moves them around before she paints them in. The
pins puncture the paintings at specific points and guide the eye across the composition, a bit like
punctuation.
The paintings are revised again and again. Colors get covered, forms get reduced, and whole
areas can end up under later layers, so earlier states stay visible. When yarn is removed, the
holes are left behind as traces of an earlier decision. Something of what came before always
remains.
