Nehemiah Cisneros
Nehemiah Cisneros (b. 1987, Los Angeles, CA)- Cisneros’ paintings magnify expressions of humanity through grotesquely exaggerated depictions of authority figures and cultural icons. Drawing inspiration from his upbringing in Mid City Los Angeles, his work blends the bold, graphic aesthetics of 1990s skateboard culture with the dramatic scale of 17th-century Baroque painting.
Cisneros uses the imagery and history of cultural stereotypes to critique the socio-political dynamics between authority and marginalized communities, particularly people of color. By juxtaposing historical and fictional elements, he examines how mainstream culture, criminality, and the judicial system perpetuate systemic failures. Through his satirical lens, Cisneros exposes the fetishized narratives that dominate contemporary media consumption.
Cisneros earned his BFA in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2021. He is a recipient of the prestigious New Opportunities Fellowship at UCLA’s School of the Arts and Architecture, where he completed his MFA in 2024.
