Raised in Oaxaca, Mexico, and named after the sanctified twin-brother healers of third-century Arabia, Cosmas & Damian Brown is an LA-based artist working out of South Central’s Tlaloc Studios (founded by Ozzie Juarez). Brown’s first major installation, Fountain: Sources of Light, is part of Art Production Fund’s ‘Body & Soul’ programme at Frieze Los Angeles 2026, and in this video Brown explains some of the impetuses that led him to create the piece, including two elemental forces that define Los Angeles – fire and water.
‘I’ve always been interested in working with the elements,’ he says. Fountain will feature six clay incense burners in the form of heads, surrounding a core of constantly pouring water taps. Fair audiences can interact with the metal fountain elements, altering the sound of the piece. Crucially, the taps cannot be turned off. Referencing recent drought in LA, Brown says ‘For me, the visual of seeing a tap turned on, and just gushing water into a sink is a little bit unnerving.’

On Saturday, February 28 Brown and APF will host a free, public, all-ages interactive art-making workshop at Frieze Los Angeles as part of the APF Art Sundae program. Children will create their own sculptural work inspired by Brown’s practice by applying paint to metal vessels. The children’s sculptures will then be displayed as part of the Frieze Projects public art exhibition.
