"Seated Boxer" is a painting that was commissioned by The Flag Art Foundation for the exhibition Strike Fast, Dance Lightly: Artist's on Boxing in the summer of 2023. The painting focuses on a hulking, marble, male figure holding a cigar whose posture is a contemporary reflection of "Boxer at Rest," a Hellenistic Greek bronze from about 330-50BC. In the foreground, a glass of whiskey and some change sit atop a small pedestal. A towel and pair of boxing gloves hang behind the figure's left shoulder. The image suggests a quiet moment of transition between bouts: is he preparing to step back into the ring or has he hung up his gloves for the last time?

| Elliot Purse (B. 1989, Chicago) is an artist based in Brooklyn NY. He attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign before going on to receive an MFA from the New York Academy of Art. His work engages themes of classicism, masculinity, and sports entertainment, in sharply rendered charcoal drawings and paintings. |
